My Takeaways from 🎥 Superintendent's Workshop 4 p.m. 8/29/2022

Updated: Sep 13, 2022

Fairly good meeting. Mara Schiff got blindsided towards the end. Keep up with the latest School District of Indian River County boring meetings! Please message us if we've missed something significant.

1️⃣ 0:34:10 Rosario brings up District Strategic Plan: Equity, Culture, and Climate, the first two bullets [¹Eliminate out-of-school suspension by increasing the use of alternatives to suspension. ²Eliminate disparities in classroom removals of all racial/ethnic subgroups of students so that risk ratios* for subgroup comparisons are equal to 1.0.].

2️⃣ 0:41:36 Rosario mentions that a lot of teachers are TOLD, if there’s a misbehavior in the classroom, “don't write up a particular student because they're African-American…” Moore has heard of this also.

3️⃣ 0:49:57 Schiff gives “stats” about how African-Americans are treated differently based in race. That’s why we calculate rates of disproportionality and disparity. Talks about unconscious bias 🤡

4️⃣ 1:58:40 Rosario starts argument regarding library books/media center items. Since any teacher can require a student to use or pull a book/material/supplemental activity at any given point, then library books/media center items are to be considered a classroom instructional item. Statute backs this up §1006.28(2)(a)1.

5️⃣ 2:01:48 School Board attorney confirms that board is responsible the content of even library books.
